Running Stairs

Running Stairs

Rocky Balboa's got nothing on you. You don't need to train for a prizefight to get in a good leg workout. Today, skip the elevator and take the stairs to activate your glutes and stretch your hamstrings. Think "Beast Mode" the next time you're tempted to take the escalator and choose the stairs instead. For a greater challenge, take two stairs at a time. The body mechanics of a brisk stair run mimic static lunges and you get all the same fitness benefits.

Instructions:

Size up the stairs before you run and don't be afraid to start slow. A conservative approach to running stairs is advised if you aren't accustomed to vigorous cardiovascular exercise. There’s really no hurry, even a brisk walk up and down the stairwell will give you a good workout. Using the posterior chain of your body, drive your weight through your heel and propel yourself up each step until you get to the top of the stairs. Descend normally and repeat.
